An outcome of 10 limited 7inch EPs inspired by the 1980s and with a strong focus on rare belgian forgotten

gold, we can hardly believe it ourselves....

....Vinyl hunting, running our own label, DIY-fanzines, organising live gigs, home-taping, mail-art, and loads of strange physical mail, it was all part of our 1980s music history, all for the sake of our individual creativity, not to mention our addiction to underground music in the first place! We can even still recall the smell of those lovely indie vinyl stores!

Unfortunately not every artist made it onto a vinyl record, apart from the lucky few.

So the cassette popped up as a convenient release format, be it in a much more obscure environment....

Now here it is, a tribute CD to our (mostly OOP) 7inch series, far from complete but compiled with love and respect! All of the artists presented here deserve to be heard by a bigger audience. Special thanks to all of you who took part!

Genre/Influences: Experimental, pop, new-wave.

Content: EE Tapes brings us once more back in history to be awakened in the darkest and most underground realms of the 80s electronic music scene. For all of those who have been the lucky ones to live during the 80s it for sure remains a special and unique decade. A few names became famous bands and so-called pioneers of industrial music, EBM, synth-pop and related genres, but the main bands remain pure underground and sometimes simply unknown to a wider audience. I remember some of these bands I saw on stage or simply during rehearsals in a wet cellar and, which never released any ‘official’ cassette.

That’s a bit the spirit of this new compilation by EE Tapes, this record features 12 bands and 19 songs. It also is a kind of compilation taken from the EE Tapes series of 10 vinyl – 7” and mainly reveals some forgotten and/or simply unknown formations, mainly from Belgium. “Insane 80s” is a kind of electronic legacy from those ‘forgotten ones’ and the least I can say is that some of them really had a strong potential.

So fasten your seat belts and get ready to travel back in time to enjoy the typical cold and somewhat experimental electro-pop of Human Dance and their cool “Hex!”. The 80s decade will be always be remembered for the great new-wave productions. Nostalgie Eternelle will not immediately ring a bell, although they revealed themselves as a real creative and cool experimental new-wave group with what we now would call great ‘vintage’ sound treatments.

The 80s was all about experiments and The Misz remains one of the most talented and yet forgotten projects in the genre. They were featured with 3 songs on this sampler and I recommend “Le Joli Jardin” and “A La Recherche De B.I.” as the most representative cuts. The electro-wave of Pseudo Code –which is a band I recently (re) discovered thanks to EE Tapes, appears to me as one of the formations with the biggest potential, but which simply remained pure underground music. Their electro-wave music is a pure lust for music lovers.

One of my favorite formations is Nine Circles, which again is a well-kept secret of the Belgian underground scene and yet dealing with a more accessible sound. This is great and sensual, evasive electro-pop. Both featured songs of this band are simply worthy of examination.

BeNe GeSSeRiT became one of EE Tapes’ fetish formations and their experimental creation always has been something special, which might appeal for anti-music lovers in the vein of Throbbing Gristle.

Kloot Per W for sure is the most famous and recognized Belgium artist of the sampler and it for sure was because of his involvement into Polyphonic Size and The Employees while he also did some interesting solo-work. Another famous group is Opéra Multi Steel, which also is one of the few bands still active. They here remind us of their early and pure new-wave inspired sound.

Subject is a last band I want to mention and, which will possibly ravish fans of electro-wave music.

Conclusion: The experimental input of all these bands probably was the reason why they never gained a wider recognition, but this compilation is a well-deserved yet posthumous consecration.

EE Tapes brengt sinds 2010 heel wat EP's uit met vergeten parels uit het tijdperk dat cassettes nog geen hipstermedium waren maar gewoon pure noodzaak. Deze brokjes vinyl kregen het intussen legendarische catalogusnummer EV... en het is ook hiernaar dat deze compilatiecd verwijst. Al deze nummers komen voor de eerste keer uit op cd en dat terwijl de originele EP's grotendeels uitverkocht zijn. Bovendien krijgen we van EE Tapes ook nog eens 5 bonustracks . Dat maakt deze release toch echt een hebbeding.

De titel Insane 80s laat zich op verschillende manieren lezen. Wat hier gepresenteerd wordt, is inderdaad een knettergekke compilatie vol new wave met een hoek af. Insane Music is echter ook de naam van een nog befaamder cultlabel dat in de 80's furore maakte met compleet ontaarde wave en avantgarde. Een heel groot deel van de bands op deze cd brachten ook werk uit op dit label of zijn gewoon een zijproject van labelbaas Alain Neffe.

Wilt u een globaal sfeerbeeld bij deze cd? Haal u dan even La fête Triste van Trisomie21 voor de geest. Heel veel nummers baden in exact dat onwerkelijke melancholisch doch licht dadaïstische sfeertje. De film Gerda '85 is een andere referentie. Toch is er stilistisch veel variatie te bespeuren. We horen heel wat minimale elektronische muziek, maar ook invloeden van prille gothic, etherische muziek, gitaarwave, no wave, coldwave, (oude) industrial enzovoort. De samenstelling gebeurde met veel zorg voor detail en de spanningsboog over de hele release werd nauwkeurig bewaard.

Wat te denken van het speelse Images van Bernthøler met dat gruwelijk schattige Engelse accent? Ik krijg er zowaar tranen van in de ogen. Ook in de bonustracks is dit project nog eens vertegenwoordigd en met beide bijdragen bewijzen ze dat ze zoveel meer zijn dan hun belpopklassieker My Suitor. Alain Neffe's Human Dance bevreemdt zoals alleen hij dat kan met het onaards mooie Hex! Nostalgie Éternelle verrast dan weer met de licht verteerbare minimalplaat Too late to be sad. Wat ik echter nog veel beter vind is hun bonustrack Voices die zichzelf meteen uit het niks tot persoonlijk favorietje katapulteert in mijn collectie met oude '70 en '80 industrial. (Ze werkten nog samen met Maeror Tri en één van hen is ook deel van Inox Kapell Schrill Schoh). Belgische wave krijgen we o.a. van The Misz die met drie nummers aanwezig present tekenen. Met Joli jardin poten ze een gelaten bossanovasprookje neer. Het is echter vooral hun track A la recherche de B.L. die me bijblijft en wat mij betreft één van de beste nummers op de compilatie is. Ook hun bonustrack Only Lunies Fall herinnert er ons aan hoe verrekt rijk de muziek uit de Belgische tapescene in de jaren '80 was. Opéra Multi Steel, dichte familie van O Quam Tristis en Collection D'Arnell-Andrea, maakt dan weer een wondermooie mix van neoklassiek met koude wave met het wondermooie Icare. Can I kiss you? vraagt Pseudo Code, alweer Neffe, zich af en met deze minimalplaat geeft hij ons alvast een valabel argument. Kloot Per W is dan weer een naam die iedereen kent maar waar nauwelijks iemand iets heeft van gehoord. Onterecht zo leert het opzwepende en licht punky Sex Wars 2. En waarom luisteren wij niet hele dage naar M.A.L., die met One Full Week een uptempo versie van een Durutti Columnplaat aanlevert? Nog een topper is het heerlijk onderkoelde The Monkey House van Absent Music. Deze band levert overigens ook de prachtige etherische afsluiter Dawn to dusk. Analoog walsen doen we op I'm deeply touched van Nine Circles; we bevestigen hierbij de titel. Deze Nederlandse formatie is meteen ook verantwoordelijk voor de enige echte synthpopplaat op de cd: Number not available mag zo op een van de vele Depeche Mode tributefuiven worden gedraaid wat mij betreft. We hadden nog geen echte ballade tot nu toe, maar daar zorgt Bene GeSSeRiT voor. Gebruik She sells sea shells on the sea show als openingsdans op uw trouwfeest en we garanderen u een psychedelisch huwelijk. Subject met L'ultima storia is de enige plaat op de hele release die we net iets te goedkoop vinden. En dan nog draagt deze plaat een inherent gevoel in zich die we niet terugvinden op vele neominimal. Eén (iets) minder plaatje op een cd met 19 nummers... Dat is bijna ongezien.

Als extra verkoopsargument krijgen we nog een mooie hoes en het korte maar interessante essay Have we become things of the past? Dit hapje tekst doet ons meteen verlangen naar meer info, meer historiek... Dat is het enige wat deze release misschien een beetje ontbeert maar los daarvan is dit een prachtig staaltje archiveringswerk met een hoge muzikale kwaliteit.

Dit is een absolute must voor elke liefhebber van... muziek.

PEEK A BOO MAGAZINE review:

EE Tapes mainly releases obscure material of the 80's. It usually involves underground music, such as early electronics or home recorded material, in other words unknown to the general public. This CD collects a number of EP’s, released earlier on the label. It is a real time document. Here you can hear what was made in the early 80's in Belgium in the sections underground wave and electronics. Of course, some songs sound a bit dated, especially the keyboards or the tempo, but you learn where New Beat originated from. You hear artists here who are searching for new musical paths, all with limited resources.

This release comes in a black and white cover. A pity that there is no additional information about the groups included in the sleevework.

What makes this collection interesting? These are songs that you do not find on other 80’s compilations. Some gems make the purchase worthwhile. I think of The Misz with Jolie Jardin, sounding like a Birkin/Gainsbourg composition. Or M.A.I. whith a nice new wave guitar in One Full Week Down, which also applies for Nine Circles' Number Not Available, the best song of the compilation. The chorus even sounds a bit like Air. The Misz with Only Lunies Fall is also stunning, while Absent Music provides The Monkey House and Dawn To Dusk, two wonderful contributions.
